Level One: Core Training

Delivered by the University of Saskatchewan College of Agriculture, a participant will gain Level One Post Secondary Certification once they have completed the Certificate of Proficiency in Indigenous People Resource Management.

The six courses required for the Certificate of Proficiency will provide students with general concepts and principles applicable to resource management in the various regions of Canada. In addition to the substantive material of management, environment and law, the courses are designed to teach aspects of written and oral communication, numeracy, computer skills, time management and leadership skills through examples and exercises. Land Managers will receive a Certificate from the University of Saskatchewan indicating proficiency in land management. The University credits earned in the Program will be eligible for recognition as credit in learning institutions across Canada.

Visit the Post Secondary Page for more information

Level Two: Technical Training

Delivered by NALMA, this level has three components:

  1. Completion of six one-week technical development modules (History and Legislation, Fundamentals, Collective/Individual, Leasing 1, Leasing 2, Permits)

  2. Completion of 37 hours work experience in First Nation Lands Management

  3. Completion of a final test paper which addresses the modules

Visit the Technical Page for more information

Professional Lands Management Certification

Successfully completing level one and two will provide the Land Manager with their Professional Lands Management Certification.

It is anticipated that some Lands Managers may not require either level one or two training. An Equivalency Standards Assessment will be offered to determine exemption from training. Passing an Equivalency Standards Assessment will also provide the Land Manager with Professional Certification.

Maintenance of Professional Lands Management Certification

NALMA Professional Lands Management Certification is used across Canada to signify that a Lands Manager meets specific criteria, keeps current in the field, and adheres to a professional Code of Ethics. It represents both an achievement and a responsibility for the individual Lands Manager.

The maintenance of Professional Lands Management Certification process is self-directed and supports the concept of continuous professional development and lifelong learning. Maintenance of Professional Certification is most important because First Nation Lands Managers require continual learning in the field to maintain a competitive edge and stay abreast of technical and legal developments.

Maintenance of Professional Lands Management Certification will identify a Lands Manger as highly qualified with clearly defined and well-developed competencies.

Maintenance Requirements

To maintain Professional Lands Management Certification an 8 hours per annum of relevant NALMA approved workshops.

Professional Lands Management Certification Maintenance requirements process is as follows:

  1. Eight (8) hours of training in the related field for every two (2) years of service

  2. Proof of completion

  3. Submit proof of completion to NALMA
